21.03.17.Intel Senior Exec Rony Friedman Set to Become Apple Israel
Rony FriedmanFriedman is expected to run Apple's development center in Israel, which employs over 1,000 workers and focuses on augmented reality technology.
Rony Friedman, who is stepping down as Intel Israel vice president and general manager of its Integrated IP and Technology Group, is moving to Apple, where he will head the company’s research and development operations in Israel – one of the most highly sought after positions in Israel’s high-tech industry, TheMarker has learned.

Apple Israel employs about 1,000 people in Israel, most of them developing technology related to augmented reality, which is reportedly going to play a central role in the next generation of Apple products, including the next iPhone.

Aharon Aharon stepped down as head of Apple Israel several weeks ago to become head of the government’s National Innovation Authority, previously known as the Office of the Chief Scientist and the main government agency supporting the high-tech industry.

Friedman began his career at Intel in 1984 after completing his studies in computer engineering at Haifa’s Technion Israel Institute of Technology. Two years after he was hired he was awarded Intel’s Architecture Prize, the highest honor it accords employees, for his work in computer-aided design.

Intel on Thursday confirmed that Friedman was leaving, while Apple Israel had not yet issued a statement.

Meanwhile, Maxine Fassberg, who headed Intel Israel until January, will reportedly not be leaving the company after all. Fassberg received an offer to take a temporary management role in connection with Intel’s $15 billion purchase of Mobileye this week. Intel, which said it will be making Israel the center for its autonomous-car R&D operations, did not respond to a request for confirmation.
